Japanese Octopus Water Dropper, c. 1830s
About the Item
A Japanese Hirado ware water dropper used in calligraphy dating to the Edo Period (1603-1868). The whimsical, molded design features an array of sea creatures and shells on the base of crashing waves. Crafted from Hirado clay, covered in celadon glaze and blue and iron enamel glazes, circa 1830s during the golden age of Hirado porcelain which lasted from 1751-1843. Minor losses.
