Japanese Meiji Cloisonne Lidded Jar Decorated with Flowers & Butterflies

About the Item

A very fine Japanese Meiji cloisonne lidded jar decorated with butterflies amidst bamboo and flowering shrubs dating from the latter 19th Century. The jar of rounded bulbous shape stands on a narrow round foot with a raised narrow neck and hat shaped cover with a raised finial. The jar is decorated with colored blooms and leaves on tall stems with four butterflies of varying size and color set against a brown cross hatch ground. A further decorative band set above a formal border is applied around the neck of the vase against a mottled yellow ground. The cover replicates the patterns around the neck with a band of bright red flower heads around the edge. The cover has a raised finial inset with a floral enamel design to the top. The inner jar and base are decorated in the customary turquoise enamels. Provenance: acquired from the British Art Market. In good condition.
