Japanese antique wooden Buddha statue/Folk Buddha/Edo period/1603-1868
About the Item
This is an old Japanese Buddhist statue made around the Edo period.
The material is believed to be cypress or cedar.
The square pedestal at the bottom was added later.
The deity of this Buddha statue is Jizo Bodhisattva.
This Buddha statue is a Jizo Bodhisattva.
Jizo is one of the bodhisattvas in the world of Buddhism.
It is the one who saves the people of the world with an infinite merciful heart.
The characteristic of the figure is that it looks like a priest.
Jizo has no hair on his head and wears kesa (long robe).
He has a cane in his right hand and a jewel (a ball that grants his wishes at will) in his left hand.
And this Jizo Bodhisattva does not have it because his hand is missing.
It is also slightly tilted to the left.
This Buddha statue has simple carvings.
Unlike the Buddhist statues of Kyoto and Edo, which are the centers of Buddhist statue carving, the expressions on the face and the carvings on the clothes are simple.
This is probably a folk Buddha made in northern Japan.
In local villages, Buddha statues were often carved by carpenters and woodcutters.
As a result, the carving techniques are inferior to those of Buddhist statues in Kyoto, but on the other hand, the simple and cute expressions and awkward lines carved on the kimono make it feel like a very familiar presence.
It is thought that it has survived to this day because it has been cherished ever since it was made.
As a reference image, we have posted a reference image of a Buddhist statue in Tohoku.
