Framed Chinese Qing Dynasty Embroidered Fifth Rank Badge

About the Item

A finely embroidered silk civil rank badge panel matted and framed in an elaborate giltwood frame circa mid-late 19th century. The square rank badge is known in Chinese as Buzi and because it is split, it was originally placed on the front of the robe. The design is centered by a silver peasant, the symbol of the fifth rank official in the court of Qing Dynasty. The bird with its wings spread looks up at a full red sun on the upper right corner. This location as well as that it was placed in the front helps us to determine that this is for the wife of the official as it is a mirrored image of her husband's frontal badge on which the sun would be on the left upper corner. The bird is surrounded by scrolling clouds, waves, flying bats, Lingzi mushrooms. Its plumage is of white except its colorful tail. The border is archaic key pattern alternate with scrolling motif. Long and short satin stiches with multi-color threads were used for the creation. It is displayed split from the middle (as the rank badge was originally made for the frontal robe) and artistically presented on a blue felt background with gold trimmed mat in a lavishly carved giltwood frame.
