19th Century Dutch Copper and Brass 'Doofpot' / Extinguishing Pot

About the Item

A Dutch 'doofpot' was a pot to store the not yet burned wood or other fuel. Because the jar was sealed airtight, the burning would soon stop due to lack of oxygen. The remaining residual fuel could be reused. Burning wood in a 'doofpot' becomes for example charcoal. In a medieval Dutch town with wooden houses, the systematic use of the 'doofpot' was very important to prevent fire. Leaving a burning stove or fireplace unattended was very dangerous. The use of the doofpot is nowadays an environmentally friendly choice. 19th century, Victorian period. The condition is good, and the doofpot is fully functional.
