About the Item
Handmade basket. Vegetable fiber and lacquered wood. China, towards the beginning of the 20th century.
Chinese basket with a flattened ovoid shape that combines meticulous and complex basketry work on the body with lid, mouthpieces, handles and foot in lacquered wood. On the tondo that tops the lid, a figurative scene has been represented in a style derived from contemporary ink painting, with precise golden brushstrokes on a black background. In it appears the figure of a deity or mythical character, a middle-aged man who runs on the clouds, holding a staff of gnarled wood and accompanied by a bird located high above.
