Early Art Deco Bowl w/ Female Nudes by Waylande Gregory

About the Item

Before he became known for his prolific production of brightly-colored ceramic sculptures and ware after World War II, Waylande Gregory created a series of classic Art Deco pieces such as this, which are much rarer. Subtly incised in a sgraffito manner, this bowl features two recumbent female nudes on each long side, and abstracted foliage on the ends. The glaze is a pale rosy tan color. The piece is signed.

    By Cowan Pottery, Waylande Gregory
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This lovely oblong dish features one of the classic subjects of high style Art Deco design -- the leaping antelope -- but in other respects it is highly unusual. It is an early work of Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery, before he struck out on his own in the 1930s, and it is finished with a striking, speckled glaze in a rich, burnt sienna color, with a touch of green in the depths of the dish. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft...
