Large Czech Art Deco Alienware Bowl by Ditmar Urbach (1919-1938)

About the Item

A rare and striking early Art Deco piece from the Czech manufacturer Ditmar Urbach. The Ditmar Brothers and the Urbach Brothers merged what was left of their ceramic companies in 1919. Their primary facility was located in Teplitz-Turn, Czechoslovakia. From 1919 to 1938, they operated as Ditmar-Urbach A.G. and produced decorative and functional ceramics, many employing forms and decoration typical of the Art Deco style. Many of the items were unmarked. The Nazis took over the factory from the Jewish owners in 1938 and it became part of Ostmark-Ceramic. The shape of this large, hand-made, ceramic bowl is very unusual. This is most likely an early Ditmar Urbach piece since the Art Nouveau style has not yet been fully replaced by the more rigid Art Deco lines. The bowl has an irregular, organic aspect both when it comes to its shape and color. This unusual combination gave the collection its name: Alienware. This rare and unique piece has a grey spotted Alienware pattern accented by beautiful turquoise bands and decorative handles. It is however the four decorative handles that make this bowl so rare and unique. As many of their products, this bowl does not have the Ditmar Urbach marking on its base, only a marking "4" (see photo). In very good vintage condition. Amazingly this vintage piece, almost 100 years old, has no cracks, chips or repairs. Hardly any signs of wear at all, close to mint condition. Dimension: diameter 29 cm/ 11 1/2", height 7.5 cm/ 2 3/4", depth 4 cm/ 1 1/2". Weight: 1756 g/ 3.87 lbs
