Ships Clock By Gay Vicarino, retailled by Pascall Atkey of Cowes.

About the Item

An exceptional Ships Clock set in a ships wheel in a heavy cast brass chromed case, striking the hours and the half hours. This eight day movement striking on a coiled blued steel gong, has a very fine signed silvered platform lever escapement with an unusual rack and pinion regulation allowing time keeping adjustment from the front. The platform is numbered 74123 with the GV stamp, the back plate is also stamped with the GV trademark and numbered 2025. The dial is signed Pascall Atkey & Sons, who were established as a ships chandlers on the Isle of White in Cowes in 1799, and are in business today. They would have retailed this clock likely to be fitted on a yacht in around 1860-1870. The dial has been left in its original condition to preserve the retailers mark. Emile Gay was listed in 1861 with premises at 20 Red Lion Square, London. He became associated with Vicarino and together they opened a workshop in Paris at 5 rue Beranger. Gay became a member of Chambre Syndicale de l’Horlogerie de Paris which was composed of prominent clockmakers in Paris who met regularly and published a journal Revue Chronométrique, documenting their activities. The pages of this journal contained many reports of participation of Gay, Vicarino et Comp. In sponsoring awards and recognition for apprentices and workers employed by those clockmakers.
