Antique Grand Tour Micro-Mosaic Paperweight with Vatican Vignettes
About the Item
This antique Grant Tour micro-mosaic paperweight is unsigned, but presumed to have originated from Italy, or possibly the Vatican City, and dating to approximately 1880 and done in the period Victorian style. The base of the paperweight is done with black slate with five inset and well executed micro-mosaics of vignettes of various Vatican buildings and landscapes. These paperweights were sold as souvenirs of the Grand Tour that wealthy socialites undertook to explore the sites of Europe during the Victorian period.
