Antique 19th Century Ambrotype Photograph On Painted Glass Ornate Sculpted Frame

About the Item

Rare and original example of an early photographic process, Ambrotype. Circa late 1850's to early 1860's. An ambrotype is comprised of an underexposed glass negative placed against a dark background. The dark backing material creates a positive image. This dark background was typically painted with a black lacquer/varnish, possibly asphaltum. They were often times displayed in elaborate cases or ornate frames. Ambrotypes were most popular in the mid-1850s to mid-1860s, succeeding the first publicly announced photographic process, Daguerreotype. Ornate black picture frame. Its Victorian style features delicately sculpted relief details, and ornate corner gold-toned glass plate corner holders, affixed with nails. Used as an elegant display to feature the adorable infant dressed in Victorian clothing and propped and styled on a patterned chair and layered background. Rare timepiece for the short-lived photographic process. Some artists today still try to recreate original methods such as this. Condition: The silver emulsion has reacted with the properties of the paint, causing degradation (silver oxidation). This is especially apparent around the edges. Some spots to photo and overall imperfections/chips to the glass and backing finish. Some cracking and wear to the frame. One corner glass holder is loose on one end. One corner glass holder is chipped off at one end, allowing a small gap between glass and frame (pictured). Measurements: (Close approximate measurements noted below. Additional measurements upon request) Frame: Width: 10.1", Height: 12.1", Depth/Thickness: 1" Photograph: Width: 2.75" Height: 3.8".

  • Mid-Century Modern Sculptural Driftwood Glass Planter Insert Coffee Center Table
    Located in Thiensville, WI
Truly unique and one-of-a-kind driftwood coffee center table with planter inserts. Nature surely delivers some beautiful artwork, such as this sculpted wood base. The shape mimics that of two separate tree trunks with their entangled root bases. The strong base is realized with a 3/8 inch oval shaped glass top, customized with planter inserts which are fixed into each of the tree trunk stems. The planter inserts have metal spikes at the bottom to allow for secured placement of faux plants. Spike plates can be removed. You have the option to add a small pot or vase within both planter openings, or plant into the customized metal pots directly. Glass can be removed by lifting upward, in which metal pots are lifted and removed as well. Metal pots are what keep the glass secure to the driftwood base. We showcased 2 separate plant ideas for reference only; plants are not included in the purchase. The movement and fusion of this driftwood adds a very natural and organic feel to any design. Coupled with the ability to customize your own style of plants with the inserts makes this table an adaptable show piece. A rectangle center table...
