Juvenile Carousel Horse.
About the Item
Carved wooden juvenile carousel horse adorned with roses. A similar horse is in operation on the Bushnell Park carousel.
Carved in the style of Charles Carmel who immigrated to the United States in 1883 where he settled in Brooklyn, New York.
Carmel often borrowed from the styles of other carvers and had very high standards- his horses appear realistic with windswept manes and are beautifully decorated. Their stature has been described as powerful, strong and aggressive.
During the golden age of carousels several companies were manufacturing in the United States. Mostly, they were carved by skilled artisans, usually European immigrants, carving horses, menagerie animals and rounding boards.
Requires some restoration.
Part of a private collection for more than 40 years.
