Monumental White Marble Elephant

About the Item

This impressive Thai elephant sculpture was carved mid-stride from a solid block of white marble. A symbol of strength, loyalty, and longevity, the elephant holds great cultural significance in Thailand and today reigns as the country's national animal. The majestic creature is considered a sacred animal in Buddhist faith and is thought to carry blessings of luck and good fortune. White elephants, known as chang samkan, are particularly auspicious and were once considered a measure of the royal family's power. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
