Bust of Prince Albert

About the Item

In centuries past, lucky artists were ennobled after mastering their craft and achieving renown, but Baron Marochetti had been born into the noblility before he proved his mettle as a sculptor. After apprenticeships in Rome, he moved to Paris where he was honored with the patronage and friendship of King Louis-Philippe. When the king fled to England at the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution, he took his court sculptor with him. There, Queen Victoria noted in her diary that Marochetti was “very agreeable, pleasant and gentlemanlike.” And when the famously laconic monarch pronounced the bust he modeled after Albert, her beloved husband and prince consort, “extremely successful,” he commissioned a marble version as a gift for her. Capitalizing on its instant fame, Marochetti created this signed bronze, which confirms the sculptor’s mastery and the sitter’s good looks. It also delights the contemporary eye with its madcap juxtaposition of Albert’s quintessentially Victorian facial hair and an ancient Roman, off-the-shoulder toga.
