Bronze Sculpture of a Seated Woman by the Artist Juan J. G. Hernandez-Abad

About the Item

Juan José González Hernández-Abad (San Cristóbal de La Laguna, 24 September 1942), known as José Abad, is a contemporary sculptor whose work emphasises the use of iron. José Abad was born on 24 September 1942 in Los Álamos street, later renamed Tabares de Cala street, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. He was educated at the Colegio Nava de los Hermanos de La Salle in the same city until he was twelve years old. He then continued at the Instituto de Enseñanza Media Cabrera Pinto, where he completed the Bachillerato Superior. During those years he began to draw, encouraged by a cousin of his father's, the watercolourist Antonio González Suárez.1 In 1960 he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of La Laguna. At that time he attended the Art History Seminar at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. However, he suffered an intoxication due to exposure to paint which forced him to retire for a time to Punta del Hidalgo, where he recovered by bathing in the sea. There he made his first sculptural interventions in stones found in the area. The following year he exhibited at the 2nd Regional Exhibition of Fine Arts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with his work Mujer, made in gilded wood; he managed to sell it to the doctor and writer Carlos Pinto Grote.1 In 1962 he exhibited at the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife together with José Luis Fajardo, presenting Ocho esculturas de la serie Tauromaquia, a set of abstract pieces in iron with animal forms.2 At the 3rd Regional Exhibition he won the Sculpture Prize with Exiliados, a work in wood which later disappeared.3 He also won the Santo Tomás de Aquino Prize of the University of Cordoba in Sculpture and Theatre with El anillo, a one-act play for an actor and chorus.4 That same year he also took part in the II Feria de Navidad del Círculo de Bellas Artes of that city together with Enrique Lite and Pedro González.5 However, they withdrew due to disagreements with the organisation of the event.6 This contributed to the foundation of the Grupo Nuestro Arte, a heterogeneous group of artists whose first exhibition was held in 1963 at the Museo de Bellas Artes, to which they remained linked.7
