Weiner Werkstätte - "Man on Horseback" Ceramic Sculpture by Reni Schaschi

About the Item

Reni Schaschl (1895 -1979) was an Austrian artist who worked across many disciplines - glass, textiles, graphics, and especially ceramics. She was an early member of the Weiner Werstätte and one of its most prolific ceramicists. This one is from 1918, the year she was chosen by Joseph Hoffman, the founder of Weiner Werstätte, with two other artists, to design the walls and ceilings of a new center for the company. Horses figured often in her ceramics work, but often with a circus theme. Unless it's a clown on this horse, we think it's not circus related. Note that there's what appears to be a hairline crack on the back of the rider, visible in one of the photos. We believe it's a flaw from when the piece was made since there are no chips in the ceramic and it ends in the collar and does not continue beyond the waist of the figure.

  • Unique Piece--Maarten Baas Burned Ikea Chair from Where There's Smoke Exhibition
    By Maarten Baas
    Located in Hamden, CT
Maarten Baas (1978) is a Dutch designer and a graduate of the famed Design Academy Eindhoven (2002). He is of the generation that followed immediately after the breakthrough 1993 landmark exhibition in Milan - Droog Design.- an assemblage of work produced by independent Dutch design studios working throughout the Netherlands. Addressing mostly ordinary domestic articles so intelligently and aesthetically re-thought and re=worked. that they reverberated throughout all of Art and Design, Maarten Baas was influenced greatly by the fresh and imaginative free-thinking which was taught at the school. Today Baas is considered one of the most influential designers working across multiple disciplines, deviating from conventional art processes while working with conventional art materials such as clay, metal, wood, and video. Baas is known for his conceptual, metaphorical, and most often amusing results which trigger the viewer to reconsider their own ambivalence toward the material world. This chair was commissioned by MOSS gallery in New York in 2004 and was offered as part of a solo exhibition called Where There's Smoke...
