Gandharan Column Capital Fragment with an Image of the Buddha
About the Item
A bold and expressive Gandharan carved gray schist column capital fragment, circa 2nd - 3rd century, ancient region of Gandhara.
The fragment of a column capital carved in high relief with sweeping acanthus leaves surrounding an image of the Buddha seated in in meditation, his hands in dhyana mudra, a halo behind him, and sheltered by overhanging leaves. His mustachioed face displays a sweet smile. His wavy hair tied in a high topknot covering his unisha. He wears loose robes which feature typical lush Greco-Roman drapery.
The Kingdom of Gandhara, in modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan, is notable for producing some of the earliest images of the Buddha. The Greco-Buddhist kingdom’s importance as an ancient crossroad is visible in the distinctive style that emerged, blending Indian, Greco-Roman and Parthian influences.
