About the Item

Unique and all handcrafted French planter with a great patina. Highly symbolic, stunningly figural and very decorative antique plant stand made by a true artisan. This late 19th or possibly very early 20th century, French jardinière comes with various, beautifully carved symbolic features with a deeper meaning which makes this antique an absolute joy to own and look at. The excellent carved heads around the side of the circular planter and also in the bottom of the first tier are so called 'green men'. They are symbols dating back to 400 AD and they are known to have been used in many cultures in Europe, America and Asia. They -among other things- Stand for fertility and rebirth. The bird-like creatures (on either side of the green men) with their fierce looking beaks wide open are mythological griffins that symbolize the rule over the heavens and earth. The lion feet that this planter stands on are actually the feet belonging to these griffins. Finally, to have carved all three dog heads out of the same piece of wood that became one of the legs of this tripod planter, again, shows the skill of this master carver. The mythological dog heads symbolize guidance, protection, loyalty, fidelity, faithfulness, watchfulness and love. And we can all do with a good portion of that in life.
