Blue Pink Hand-Painted Porcelain Vase by Japanese Contemporary Master Artist

About the Item

Exquisite contemporary Japanese large gilded porcelain vase, intricately hand painted in shades of blue and pink on a beautifully shaped body, a striking signed work by highly acclaimed master artist from Arita-Imari region of Japan. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this award-winning artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. Yu-riko or underglaze-red that is used in creating this piece is a technique that uses a copper-based colorant for underglaze painting that develops a red color under a transparent glaze. This technique is traced back to 14th century China and was used in the early Imari period (1610-1650). However, since it was very difficult and time-consuming to create the underglazed crimson-red and the failure rate was very high, less and less artists attempted it. If the firing temperature is too high, the porcelain will not be colored and will remain white, and if the temperature is too low, it will be colored green. This exquisite large hand painted porcelain vase comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 12.5 in, D 14.5 in.

  • Pair Japanese Porcelain Lidded Vases Imari Hand Painted, Edo Period circa 1830
    Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
These are a high quality pair of very decorative gilded hand enameled Japanese porcelain lidded vases which we date to the Edo period of the 19th century, circa 1830. Each vase has a baluster open necked shape and has been hand painted in an Imari design with varying shades of under-glaze cobalt blue, with over-glaze burnt orange, salmon and grey enamels. The decoration alternates around the central section with many flowers, buildings, fences and other motifs. The quality of the painting is high and there are border designs around the vases and the lids. There are no marks to the base. Overall a very beautiful pair of Japanese vases. Notes: Imari porcelain is the name given to Japanese export porcelain...
