"Golden Dolphin, " Art Deco Glass Vase with Enameled Decoration, Sweden, 1930s
About the Item
Striking and unique, this flaring glass vase -- unsigned, but clearly showing the influence of Vicke Lindstrand's work at the Orrefors glass company -- is decorated with an antique dolphin figure riding on Art Deco waves, all executed in an old-gold enamel. The artist used glass with undulating thickness -- suggesting to the viewer that he or she is looking at an underwater scene -- which Lindstrand favored as well. The dolphin is beautifully executed, using an antiquated dolphin form well established in Medieval and Renaissance painting.
