Michael Cho Art Pottery Postmodern Vase Black

About the Item

ostmodern bulbous ceramic vase was hand thrown and hand decorated by Michael Cho with black matte finish and raised pink and green abstract geometric decorations done in glossy glaze. The rim and interior are also glazed in glossy mottled green grey, creating rich texture variations within concise color palette. The vase stands 3.65" tall with 3.5" diameter opening; it is signed by the artist on the bottom. Michael Cho immigrated to the United States from Seoul, South Korea in 1971. In college he took several art and ceramics courses, and after graduating in early ‘80s he started his own studio, making hand thrown, high fired stoneware decorated with a mixture of oxides with brushed glaze. Michael exhibits nationally and is represented by multiple galleries. Michael throws his pieces without trimming to avoid shape distortions and limitations. Per artist's description, each piece is allowed to dry completely before being sprayed with metal oxides which produce the background finish of matte metallic black. Ornamental brush strokes are applied with high-gloss glazes as the last step before firing. High firing process transforms the materials: the clay becomes stone-like, the oxide finish coats the piece as a thin shell of metal, and the brush strokes acquire the properties of glass.
