"Nudes Riding Deer", Superb Art Deco Vase by Mayodon in Blue, Green and Gold

About the Item

Gorgeously glazed in jewel tones -- sapphire blue, emerald green, and gold -- this footed urn or vase by the great Jean-Leon Mayodon depicts a line of three female nudes riding Art Deco deer, traveling around the surface of the piece and surrounded by a larger group of running deer. The human figures are glazed in tones of bluish-green, and the ground is bathed in blue laced with gold, like the end papers of a precious book. Mayodon loved to depict nude mythological figures in bucolic or Classical settings, and was one of France's great masters of Art Deco porcelain and ceramics. He created a great variety of ceramic vases, jars, plates and bowls from his own studio, and as an artist for Primavera, the great workshop established by Le Printemps department store in Paris. The bottom is clearly marked with Mayodon's monogram.
