Pair of Circa 1890 Painted French Barbotine Figural Vases
About the Item
This wonderful pair of barbotine figural vases was hand-sculpted and painted in France, circa 1890. The main bodies of the vases have a flowering tree on a white and blue background representing the sky. Both feet have been painted dark brown with trailing leaves.
Because they were hand-crafted, the dimensions vary slightly, with the vase with the male figure being taller. The vases retain their original, vivid paint. The gentleman is clad in a darker ensemble than the woman, with dark brown and yellow striped trousers and a tan overcoat with tails and green stripes. A crescent-shaped object is tucked under his right arm. The woman is wearing a bright yellow dress with a large blue ribbon on the left hip. She has on a similarly colored bonnet that is blue with a yellow plume and ties. Golden colored elbow-length opera gloves cover the woman’s arms, as she holds part of her dress in her right hand.
These tall, narrow barbotine figural vases can be used with fresh cut flowers, such as long stem roses. They can also be displayed as wonderful accessories on a mantel or side table.
