Small Danish earthenware vase horn-decorated with green leaves on white a base

About the Item

This small earthenware vase by Herman A. Kähler is horn-decorated with green leaves on a white base. Executed by Herman A. Kähler, Denmark, ca. in the 1940s When Herman H. C. Kähler took over the family company in 1917 as the third generation of Kähler leadership, he reintroduced horn painting. This technique has deep roots in pottery history and was first used at Kähler's workshop back in the early 1800s. The demanding technique required a skilled and experienced painter to apply the colored slip (begitning) to unfinished items. A goose feather was placed at the tip of a hollow cow horn, which was filled with slip, and the amount was controlled by finger pressure. The vase is incised with the ‘HAK’ monogram.
