Resauration Surtout de Table Centerpiece Composed of a Four-Piece

About the Item

Large, restauration period centerpiece composed of a four-piece, mirrored platter mounted in a gilt bronze, openwork setting. The intricate sculpting of the gilt bronze features thyrses, crowns and feminine characters holding long grapevine garlands, which are all symbols attributed to the Roman god, Bacchus. The surtout de table rests on ten supports with clawed feet that are embellished with scrollwork and palmettes and topped with a basket of fruit. Centerpieces that were richly decorated with silver, copper, or bronze were an integral part of table decorations of great meals during the 19th century. The practice of garnishing the center of dining room tables with works of art dates back centuries. For example, during the 14th and 15th centuries, desserts often took on the appearance of a centerpiece, but it was during the 17th century that the use of an artistic centerpiece became commonplace, associating decorative objects with lighting and opulent bouquets of flowers. These objects were often displayed on a large platter composed of one or more pieces that were sometimes mirrored and sometimes set in a decorative framework. circa 1820. • Antique French Mirrored Ormolu Surtout de Table Center Piece, circa 1900
    Located in Dallas, TX
Known in France as a surtout de table, this mirrored centerpiece is from circa 1900. The 13 ¾ inch diameter mirror is surrounded by a tripartite bronze base, which has been gilded using an ormolu technique, which is a coating of finely ground gold. Notice the bright color of the ormolu, indicating that a high-karat gold was used (total diameter is 17 1/2 inches). The edge of the mirrored section is surrounded by a thin ring of highly detailed grapevines. At the bottom edge of the base is another cluster of grapes, with much larger leaves. The second ring is interrupted on three occasions by a lobed leaf, each terminating in a thick, volute foot. Surtout de tables were often gilded or silvered or surrounded by exotic metals, making them highly sought-after furnishings. Typically, they were used as ornamental centerpieces on formal dining tables, allowing candlesticks and serving pieces to be displayed, although our mirrored ormolu surtout de table...
