Four Rare Ejvind Nielsen (`1916-1988) Danish Studio Ceramic Vases

About the Item

NOTE: Dimensions provided refer to the tallest vase. Highly sought-after by collectors of Mid-Century studio pottery, the vessel work of Ejvind Nielsen is characterized by simple forms and subtle glazes in natural tones, which often blend and bleed together to create a rich and soothing look. Nielsen is also known for his exotic and colorful animal tiles, made in collaboration with his wife, Lizzi Nielsen. This grouping of (4) petite vases features conical and bottle-forms, with thick variegated brown glazes over reddish earthenware clay. Applied liberally, these glazes create a rich tapestry of dappled and striated textures, for an earthy and organic look. Each is hand-signed "Ejv. Nielsen / Denmark" underneath. Born in Denmark in 1916, Nielsen spent time in England in the 1930's before serving as a volunteer during the Spanish Civil War. He established his own pottery studio in Hvidovre, Denmark, in 1943; the studio remained open until the mid-1980's.
