19th Century Japanese Hand Blown Glass Cups Meiji - Taisho Period Set of 5
About the Item
EXCEPTIONAL.
A set of 5 incredible hand blown glass cups from Japan. These incredibly rare pieces would have been created approximately between 1890-1920's in Japan. They would have been used for ‘shaved ice’ or Kakigori. They are referred to as Kōrikoppu.
The origins of Kakigōri date back to the Heian Period, beginning in the 8th Century. In Japanese history, when blocks of ice saved during the colder months would be shaved and served with sweet syrup to the Japanese aristocracy during the summer. Kakigōri's origin is referred to in "The Pillow Book" a book of observations written by Sei Shannon in the 10th Century, who served the Imperial Court during the Heian period. Kakigōri became more accessible in the 19th century, when ice became more widely available to the public during the summertime. The first Kakigōri store is believed to have opened in Yokohama in 1869
Each glass is unique and reveals a remarkable milky - opaline like effect when seen against darker backgrounds. The swirling dotted glass, twirling down to the base is something like a blown glass tornado with a lipstick top. The rimmed red glass is something to behold. Drinking from this is like kissing the lips of a myth.
They are sensual, curvaceous, and elegant vessels appearing to be spinning but frozen in time - a portrait of glass in time. Over 100 years old these ‘antiques’ appear more contemporary than ancient. I do not think there exists a more chic glass to enjoy whatever fills your cup.
An extraordinary set of 5 cups that will be the talk of any dinner party or personal collection. They are of Museum Quality.
