About the Item
Sterling Silver THREE PIECE TEASET - TEAPOT, SUGAR & CREAM
All three pieces are by Barker Brothers, but the teapot and sugar bowl have a different set of hallmarks to the cream jug.
Teapot & Sugar Bowl:- 3 Sheaves & Sword - Assay office Mark at Chester
Lion - Sterling guarantee
Lower case a - Date letter for Chester 1926
The maker`s mark is HEB over FEB for Herbert Edward Barker and Frank Ernest Barker of Barker Brothers Ltd.
The Cream Jug:- Anchor - Assay Office Mark at Birmingham
Lion - Sterling quality guarantee mark
Upper case C - Date letter for Birmingham 1927
The maker`s mark is B.B. over S. Ld, for Barker Brothers Silver Ltd.
During 1926 and 1927 the company was in the process of changing its maker`s mark, to the B.B.S.Ld. This accounts for this teaset having the different marks.
The use of the two different assay offices would be purely a logistical one.
A delightful teaset - perfect for a dining table of about four people.
Beautifully made with ten panel sides. The domed lid panelled to match the pot sides. The oval underside is slightly raised in the centre so that to sits flat and does not rock. A very strong C shaped handle with broad flat thumb rest.
Made of wood which is an excellent insulator against the hot tea.
The urn shaped lift on top is also made of wood.
All, apparently, unused - no bumps, dents of scratches.
A really splendid set that is 95 years old and as good as new.
Total weight:- 955 grams / 30.7 ounces.
Pot capacity:- 1000 millilitres - 1.75 pints ( not over full)
