Paavo Tynell Aulanko Hotel Ceiling Lamp
About the Item
One of the few lamps Paavo Tynell designed and made for the cigar room in the famous Aulanko Hotel. These lamps along with the Märta Blomstedt "Aulanko Chair" were designed for the hotel and specifically for the cigar room. The big size coupled with the unsophisticated and yet strikingly simple design makes this lamp a perfect fit for a spacious room. This lamp was made in two different sizes, this being the bigger size with a staggering 18 light bulbs.
It's in good original condition except for two scratches shown in the pictures.
This lamp is of course a Paavo Tynell collector's dream item. We are unable to say if any of the other lamps designed for the cigar room still exist or not, We are unable to say if any of the other lamps still exist, but according to the plans and photos from the original space, three of these big ones were made and two of the smaller ones. Please check our other listing for the smaller sized one.

Paavo Tynell
Paavo Tynell, who was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1890, started his career as a tin- and blacksmith at the company Kory Oy. Simultaneously, he studied at the Helsinki University of Industrial Arts, from which he graduated as a master craftsman in 1913. In 1918, Tynell co-founded the metalwork and lighting company Oy Taito Ab. At first, the company focused mostly on interior and exterior metalwork, such as statues and railings. Later, during the 1930s, Taito also began producing lamps for the lighting sector. Both Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck would design works for the company.
