- Uno & Östen Kristiansson Wood and Leather Swedish Wall Mirror for Luxus, 1960sBy Uno & Östen Kristiansson, Luxus VittsjöLocated in Roma, ITAmazing midcentury in teak with a leather hanging strap wall mirror. This astonishing item was designed by Uno & Östen Kristiansson for a Luxus production during the 1960s. The frame circulates the glass and is made out of different pieces of wood which were interlaced with each other, creating a beautiful variety of colours and textures. This piece is a magnificent example of the Swedish midcentury style and it is in excellent vintage condition. A great element for a midcentury living room, adding elegance and depth. Dimensions (cm): Diameter - 56 Depth - 4,7 Swedish brothers and designers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, known for their lighting and mirror designs, were particularly active between the 1950s and 1970s in Sweden. Prolific designers with very precise aesthetics - recognized as a characteristic of the modern Scandinavian style - did not leave us much biographical information, but their designs are highly appreciated by vintage lovers, and are now highly sought after in the vintage market. Uno was born in 1925 and Östen two years later. Not much is known about their formative years, but it can be seen that they initially lived in southern Sweden, learning the furniture trade from their father, who ran his own furniture company, Vittsjö Furniture (founded 1919) - who takes its name from the Swedish country where it was based. In 1950 Uno Kristiansson founded his own manufacturing company, Luxus, located in Vittsjö, with which he produced a series of products, including interior lamps, furniture and mirrors, designed together by the two brothers. In the 1950s the collections are launched in Sweden nationally, and internationally throughout Europe. In 1968 Luxus presented a collection of lamps with lampshades in brightly colored fabrics, which perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the 1960s, which are said to have been designed by the renowned Finnish textile artist Marjatta Metsovaara (1927-2014). It is rumored that in 1966 Östen took over his father's business and renamed it Östen Kristiansson AB, which today however operates under the original name, Vittsjö Möbelfabrik AB. It is not known for sure what was produced during this period, or if the company was separated from Luxus. Like many of their Scandinavian contemporaries, the Kristianssons favor teak in many of their designs, but also include glass, leather, plastic and acrylic in their work. Prominent designs by the brothers include the Plafo ceiling lamp (1950s) in acrylic, the UFO lamp (1950s) in opal glass - which was then produced in acrylic in the 1960s, the Model 204 Hunting Chair ( 1954), and a series of minimalist mirrors from the 1960s that reflect the style of Jacques Adnet's Circulaire Mirror (1950), originally produced by Hermès. Since the 1970s, Luxus has focused on creating lighting for public spaces, again using acrylic models, with contrasting minimal wood details. Many online sources include in Luxus's repertoire list: Arkitektura Lamp, Candus Lamp, Skulptura Lamp, Discus Lamp...Category
