Mercury mirror 19th century

About the Item

Unique mirror with a contemporary rectangular frame in alder wood, characterised by a pinkish-white colour and a chipped effect in certain places. This highly resistant wood is generally used in joinery and the decorative arts. A frame consists of four boards joined together by circular wooden tenons. The frame is made entirely of wood. Inside, the mercurised mirror is set into a groove. In the frame, the mirror is recessed to a depth of 8 centimetres. Production of this type of mirror was banned in 1850 because mercury is highly toxic to humans and the environment. The mirror in question show significant characteristics of a mercury coating, visible through several signs of surface deterioration. Black spots are also visible, reinforcing this indication. In addition, a slight green tint is visible in the reflection, caused by. Oxidation of the mercury over time.
