19th Century French Regence Style Silver and Gold Leaf Mirror "a Parcloses"

About the Item

This stunning silver and gold gilt wall mirror has eight side mirrored panels separated and held in place from the main center mirror by giltwood ornamentation. The arrangement of the separate pieces of glass seen here gives this type of mirror its distinctive name of a “Parecloses”. This term refers to the pieces of molding that join the inner and outer frames. The mirror has a total height of nearly 51 inches, making a powerful statement on any wall. The removeable crown piece is slotted in, and rests atop the mirror simply by gravity. It is surmounted by a wonderful large gold shell, and below this is lavish, symmetrical layout of alternating silver and gold motifs, including flowers, leaves, a large urn, and small and large scale crossing patterns known in the Regence style as “diapering”. The mirror frame below this large crown is also gilded in alternating silver and gold elements, with the 4 corners accentuated by large angular foliations. The large and unique mirror is in very good condition, and will make a grand impression on any wall on which it’s hung.
