Je baise les doigts de votre altesse». ["Picking up my almanac to date this letter in which I wanted to tell you that I am well —that the doctors have been sent away, that Madame de Galbois' lemon balm water, that fan with gold bees I received from the mistress of the house, have all put me back on my feet— I see that it's Saint Mathilde... quite ashamed of my ignorance of the saints and saints of the calendar, I hasten, dear princess to wish you from the bottom of my heart the best of celebrations. I kiss your highness' fingers. ] ** a signed autographed letter, on a small folded sheet, by James Tissot. «Voici quelqu'un à qui vous pourrez remettre les 400 francs dont vous m'avez fait mention. Recevez avec mes remerciements toutes les félicitations pour le succès que vous avez obtenu...». [ Here is someone to whom you can give the 400 francs you mentioned to me. With thanks and congratulations for all the success you have achieved...»] *** a calling card from d'Edmond de Goncourt stating « Monsieur, voulez vous passer un matin, je vous solderai votre note et vous donnerez (sic) des livres ». [Sir, would you come by one morning, I will pay your bill and give you some books] Illustrations by James Tissot, a treasure from the library of Guy Bigorie. James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836 – 1902) was a French painter and illustrator who became famous for his genre paintings and portraits of high society and scenes of everyday life and was celebrated both in England, where he was active for many years, and in France. Tissot's "reputation as a painter is reflected in the enhanced standing of his etchings. He is remembered as an illustrator chiefly by his designs for this novel of French society which the Goncourts had written in 1864. His interest derived from the parallel which he discerned between the slow decline of its heroine and that of Kathleen Newton, the woman with whom he lived ." [Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 275] The GONCOURT BROTHERS, Edmond (1822–1896) and Jules (1830–1870) formed a formidable and unique team as writers, intellectuals and publishers, know for their naturalist style and their reactionary politics. They founded the Académie Goncourt, which has has awarded the Prix Goncourt since 1903, probably the most important literary prize in French literature. Their novel "Renée Mauperin" first appeared in installments in 1864 and was published in one volume the same year by Charpentier. It is the story of an "emancipated" young woman whose brother has unstoppable social and financial ambitions. He uses blackmail and deceit to attain his goals with absolute lack of moral restraint. Renée is indignant and reveals his deceits, causing him to be challenged to a duel, in which he is killed. Tortured by remorse, Renée lets herself die in order to expiate her guilt.

Two one-page letters on Faber & Faber stationery, SIGNED by T. S. Eliot. The first, dated 1 December 1949 is double sided, 10 1/4 x 8 inches (266 x 204 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). The second is dated 23 August 1950, one sided, 8 x 6 7.8 inches (204 x 174 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). Typed in black and red ink, central vertical and horizontal folds, with no sign of wear. The accompanying envelopes show minor signs of wear and the back flap of the first envelope is partially torn. Fine. These two typewritten letters were addressed to Robert Cecil Bald (1901 – 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who taught at Cornell University starting in 1937 and then at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965. They attest to a cordial exchange between a poet and a scholar, and the rich network of contacts that Eliot had both as an author and as the long-time editorial director at Faber & Faber in London (1925-1965). In the first letter, dated 1 December 1949 with a Cornell University address, Eliot declines an offer...

  • The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, Signed by Carla Laemmle, Photoplay
    By Gaston Leroux
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Leroux, Gaston. The Phantom of the Opera. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, [1925]. Illustrated by Andre Castaigne. Signed by actress Carla Laemmle. 8vo. Rebound in black 1/.4 leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt stamps, and gilt titles to spine. New matching archival slipcase. Presented is a photoplay edition of Gaston Leroux’s best-known novel, The Phantom of the Opera. This printing was published by Grosset & Dunlap, in New York, in 1925, to accompany the 1925 Universal Pictures film adaptation starring Lon Channey. It is illustrated throughout with scenes from that production, as well as with illustrations by Andre Castaigne. Additionally, the book is signed on the full title page by actress and prima ballerina Carla Leammle. The book has been beautifully rebound in handsome ¼ black leather and black cloth boards, with raised bands and gilt stamps and tiles to the spine, and a matching black archival slipcase. Partly inspired by historical, nineteenth century events that took place at the famous Paris Opera, the novel chronicles the masked Phantom’s obsessive love for a young chorus girl named Christine. The Phantom of the Opera was first published as a serial in the French Magazine Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910. It was released in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte & Cie. The first American edition was published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1911. Due to its popularity, The Phantom of the Opera became the source for numerous adaptations, including the 1925 Universal Pictures film starring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award-winning 1986 musical. Alexander Grosset and George T. Dunlap first met while working for the American Publishers Corporation. In 1898, Grosset & Dunlap formed a new partnership with the goal to shift the focus of the publishing industry from expensive books for the few to inexpensive books for the masses. In order to avoid paying royalties and other publishing fees, Grosset & Dunlap started reprinting books that were already in print. With these profits, the partners purchased paperbound books in bulk to rebind them in cloth and resell. As the company grew, Grosset & Dunlap were able to purchase reprint rights from publishers before publication, including reprint rights from Edward Stratemeyer for the Hardy Boys...
