About the Item
A rare first edition of Washington Irving's "Tales of a Traveler" published under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon by John Murray Albemarle-Street, London 1824. Bound in 3/4 calf with marbleized cover and endpapers. This is a 2 volume collection of essays and short stories composed when Irving, an American writer of great renown, was living abroad in Germany and Paris. Starting with a series of ghost stories, it then tells the back stories of people from literary scholars to Italian bandits finishing with tales of treasure hunting in England. Irving's influence on American folk and popular culture is his most enduring legacy.
