Antique Automaton The Whistler by Phalibois
About the Item
Rare Automaton Whistler by Henry Phalibois, with papier-mache character head modeled with puckered, slightly-open lips, defined cheek bones, slender neck, threaded blue paperweight eyes and articulated "dancing" eyelids, elegantly posed with arched back and stomach pushed forwards, his right hand with index finger oustreteched, articulated from the elbow with the lever passing through the side of his torso, his left hand nonchalantly thrust into his trouser pocket, on velvet-covered base containing going-barrel mechanism with bellows causing the figure to tilt his head from side to side, winking impertinately at the audience, and raising and lowering his outstretched left hand as though keeping time to the tune, in probably original midnight-blue velvet jacket, breeches and beret, leather shoes, stockings, and later shirt and collar, ht. 34in See Bailly, Automata, the Golden Age, p165 for an identical model. . In 1895, Henry Phalibois advertised "figures playing instruments, speaking, singing, whistling, laughing". Many of his automata did all five things at once, although this Whistler is more restrained. Depicting a Parisian street urchin, he appears on Phalibois' letter head and advertisements at the turn of the century, and was evidently considered by his creator as something of a mascot for the new direction the firm was taking in the creation of large, character driven pieces that depict raffish characters with surprising, often vulgar actions

- French Musical Automaton Picture ClockLocated in New Orleans, LAOne of the most amazing timepieces we have ever acquired that offers far more than meets the eye, this incredible work of art blends the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complexities of both a cylinder music box and an automaton. While it is clear to see the integrated clock residing within the arched giltwood and gesso frame, when activated, this painting quite literally comes alive. As the cylinder mechanism within plays its lovely tune, every character in the farrier's shop becomes animated – from the group of farrier's toiling away at the forge and anvil forming the horseshoes, to the wagging of the charming terrier's tale. This musical automaton picture clock is attributed to Xavier Tharin of Paris who was the preeminent creator of this fantastical "moving pictures", especially this particular farrier scene. His process mixed oil painting and hand-colored lithograph images that were layered starting from the back, middle and foreground to craft the complex series of movements throughout the painting. A look inside this particular work reveals the complex mechanism (with the three gongs, pendulum and cylinder components immediately visible) which must run the timepiece, the cylinder musical component plus the multitude of moving elements in the painting...a truly incredible feat considering the technical prowess to create just one of these devices. Musical picture clocks...Category

- George Bussey Automaton Caddie Golf BagLocated in Oxfordshire, GBAntique Caddie Golf Bag, George Bussey Automaton Caddie. A wonderful example of an early auto caddy by George Bussey. This is a rare find indeed as very few of these bags have survived, and they are difficult to obtain. The caddie has a boxwood carry handle and the main body of the caddie is made of mahogany. The boxwood handle is attached to the oak legs via metal rods and a brass mechanism. With this clever design the legs will open out automatically when the lower end is placed on the ground, they will then fold back in when lifted up. The canvas & leather bag for golf balls and the half pencil bag to the bottom of the stand are the original bags (flap is a replacement). The caddie stand is stamped with Bussey's name on the brass mechanism, and on both legs. There is a brass embossed trade label "Geo. Bussey & Co., London (with the Bussey arrow logo)' pinned onto the caddie bag...Category
