Elizabethan Chair with Needlepoint Upholstery

About the Item

This hand-carved Elizabethan chair has been elaborately decorated. The wooden frame features a carved acanthus leaf motif both on the scrolled arms, legs and cross supports. The apron features a wonderful pierced wood carving replete with scrolls and curls. The beautiful needlepoint upholstery is a continuation of the scroll motif and is secured with an oversized nailhead trim. During the Elizabethan era, the furniture in a person's home was an important symbol of his status. Elizabethan chairs were elaborately designed and were mainly seen only in the homes of those who were very wealthy. These chairs were not built so much with comfort in mind, but instead to show the unique workmanship of those who created them.
