Solid Oak Brutalist Pair of Chairs, France, circa 1940s

About the Item

With a robust organic form and an earth-toned palette, this pair of chairs is the embodiment of Brutalism. In furniture and décor, the Brutalist movement was somber, giving importance to eerie organic and rugged shapes in organic, earthy tones. The defining characteristics of Brutalist furniture design can be observed in these chairs: hard edges, unornamented, solid wood structures, exposed joints, and raw wooden surfaces. The sole form of ornamentation is the hole found on the top of the back of each chair. They prevent the backs from looking heavy, creating an airy look for the design. The high backs and seats provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood. Wood from oak trees is durable and long-lasting wood with a rich colour and texture, which is why it remains beloved and therefore, timeless. In these chairs, the pattern and grain of the wood is striking, showing the traces of history in every line and mark. Sensitive touches enliven the Brutalist design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. The quality of woodworking is evident, with handcrafted edges and impeccable joinery that masterfully utilizes nothing but the wood itself. The robust legs are splayed gently to assure stability with carved edges. Through its eccentric geometries and expressive forms, - Brutalist furniture design’s best qualities - these chairs are perfect for any interior to add some organic charm. Wood has never gone out of style, and pieces with an emphasis on a natural look are only gaining popularity today. These oak chairs are equally striking standing alone, or as parts of an interior with a medley of styles. In the 21st century Brutalist furniture design has been making a comeback, making 20th century pieces like these chairs rare and valuable pieces of the movement. Condition: In good vintage condition.
