This striking armchair was designed by Henning (Henry) Kjærnulf in the 1960s. This particular model named 'Kurul' was produced by EG Kvalitetsmøbel in Denmark.
This armchair in solid oak blends the classic kurul design with rounded, curved contours, featuring an upholstered seat and backrest. The oak frame is intricately carved and sculpted, demonstrating the craftsmanship of both the designer and the manufacturer. The chair could also serve effectively as a stylish addition to a desk or office setting.
The chair is in a very good condition, the wood with a natural and even patina. Some minor, non-disturbing marks on the wood. The seat and backrest have been reconditioned and newly upholstered in a beautiful ivory Lelièvre Paris bouclé fabric.
Kjærnulf's style with organic modern and sometimes brutalist references fits well in the Scandinavian modern tradition. His preference for raw and pure woods such as oak and his specific carved details can be considered in the more international context of the works of Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Chapo and Guillerme et Chambron, working in the same era.
