Empire Mahogany Bench With Cornucopia
About the Item
This unique empire mahogany bench originates from the nineteenth century. It has a tight straight hood with even arms. The curved armrests are each decorated with a carved cornucopia. The mahogany bench rests on feet with a decorative ‘ball and claw’ motif. The bench is covered with green upholstery and contains sleek lines of beige fabric separation. Furthermore it contains of two fine bolster rolls with a diagonal seam with gathered end, fabric covered button and covered cord. A wonderful detail is the earlier mentioned carved cornucopia, from the Latin cornu (horn) and copia (plenty), also known as the ‘Horn of Plenty’. It was a symbol of abundance and nourishment in classical antiquity and was often depicted as a large, slightly twisted horn-shaped container overflowing with produce, flowers, or nuts. The ‘Horn of Plenty’ is renowned in symbolism as an attribute of Flora and Fortuna, as well as a sign of the limitless blessings bestowed upon man without his interference
