17th Century French Oak Chest
About the Item
Superb 17th century French chest decorated with patterns of rosettes within circle carvings on the front panel. A solid construction having a single plank, hinged lid that opens to reveal two compartments. Four solid oak slabs with rustic dovetailing, a lovely visible detail. A substantial, heavy and well made chest.
This antique chest dates from the period when chests or coffers were often the main items of furniture in French households.
Excellent rich colour and patina. A very versatile item!

The upper part, with a dentil moulding cornice, is set back. Two doors having deep fielded panels of figured pollard oak, and barley twisted pillars, the key and escutcheon are on the right door and two drawers below. The lower body rests on a large protruding moulded base, having two drawers at the top and two doors below, again with the original door lock and key, matching the above, that open to reveal storage with a shelf.
