French Louis XV Walnut Marquetry and Ormolu Two-Drawer Commode, Early 19th C.

About the Item

An exceptionally handsome early 19th century French Louis XV walnut, burlwood, satinwood, and fruitwood marquetry lockable two-drawer commode or petite chest with ormolu mounts and embellishments. Dynamically figured and beautifully contrasting wood veneers and trim of various types on striking display throughout. Serpentine-front top, drawers, and apron transition nicely to graceful cabriolet legs, and further speak to the craftsperson’s skillful execution. A wonderful array of elaborately done ormolu cast metal (likely bronze) mounts and embellishments enliven the piece from top to bottom, with the Rococo-esque pulls and escutcheons being of particular and eye-catching note. Both drawers are lockable and the original key is included, which is a rarity. A handwritten notation that reads “Emily Le Mesurier” is on the interior left-hand side of the bottom drawer, providing an intriguing clue to the commode's centuries-old provenance via a presumably proud previous owner.
