Rococo Oak Chest of Four Drawers, Denmark circa 1770-1800

About the Item

Large antique oak rococo chest of four drawers with handsome brass hardware pulls all resting on cabriolet feet. This commode has been given an exceptional new professional blue/green seafoam layered painted finish and has been lightly distressed, bringing out the natural oak below, fitting the age and grace of the dresser. This large chest has been restored, case is sturdy and drawers function with two large brass pulls on each drawer. One key included for aesthetics. Locks no longer function. All cracks, dings, aged separation (in particular the bottom of each drawer), chinks in upper trim and back are reflective of age and do not detract from the beauty of this large chest of drawers. Old newspaper is seen torn along the back. Please refer to professional photos for clear understanding of color, condition and details; photo lighting, individual monitor display and home lighting may all impact how item is viewed. This chest appears more blue in low light and green with increased light, with overall teal appearance. What an extraordinary chest of drawers! The top is plain with a bullnose edge and the sides are nicely paneled. The front corners of the case are boldly reeded and toward the top a sprig of lily of the valley is delicately carved inside the reed. Above this is a massive scrolled acanthus leaf corbel, appearing to support the top. The drawers are more or less equal in depth with faux panels created by an applied mitered molding with a bead running round the inside. The knobs are rare; hardly ever seen They are the classic shape of the ceramic knobs found on much Central European vernacular furniture, except these are carved in wood. The gourd-like feet have similar contours. The oak was finished in dark tones and then was painted over in buttermilk. At some time it was painted white and has worn or been rubbed through to the earlier layers. The result is a delightful piece that need not be confined to the bedroom, but rather can be enjoyed wherever some whimsical storage...
