Antique mid 19th century satinwood, marquetry, and calamander writing table

About the Item

An unusual fine quality mid-19th Century serpentine-shaped Writing Table, having coromandel end-grain moulded edge top and tulipwood crossbanding throughout. The Table, profusely inlaid with strapwork & flower garlands, supported on cabriole legs applied with gilt brass corner mounts. Robert Blake and his family were firmly established in the London cabinet making Industry during the reigns of George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria. Robert was established from 1826 to 1839 and he was known for his work in the style of Boulle who was established in France during the reign of Louis XIV in the 17th century. Blake occasionally worked for Edward Holmes Baldock who was a dealer to the Royal Family and John Webb, a dealer in Old Bond Street. The Blake family were established at 8 Stephen Street Tottenham Court Road, London, from 1826 to when the company closed in 1881. There is very little known about the Blake family itself, but Robert did have four son’s who followed him into the cabinet making business. One of them was Charles Blake and this fine writing table is firmly attributed to him. The serpentine top is luxuriously inlaid with fine flowing floral marquetry and ribbon garlands. This fine work mirrors all the intricate marquetry in the frieze and on the elegantly slender cabriole legs. The fine ormolu mounts are wonderful quality. This table was made around 1850, in Satinwood and banded in Calamander.
