Pair of Chinese Low Limestone Pedestals, circa 1850

About the Item

Despite being carved from solid limestone, each of these 19th century stone display stands has the presence of a plush, down-filled cushion. Resembling a column base, each cushion functioned as a simple plinth to elevate a seated Buddhist figure. The pair continues a long Chinese tradition of stone furniture, valued for its rich texture and inherent permanence. The minimal cushions are wonderful as pedestals for large planters or as table stands for sculptures or precious objects.
