Swedish modern elm side table in the manner of Oscar Nilsson, 1930-40s

About the Item

Swedish modern side table in the manner of Oscar Nilsson. Made by unknown designer and maker. Produced by a Swedish cabinetmaker during the 1930-40s. Made from elm wood. Very good vintage condition with few signs of age related wear and patina. In Sweden during the early 1930s, the functionalist movement sought to establish an optimal environment for contemporary individuals. Concurrently, through scholarly discussions, the crafts industry, and Swedish furniture manufacturing companies, a transformative evolution took place. This evolution materialized the principles outlined in the program declaration of the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, progressing beyond mere theory to become a reality for an expanding populace. By the early 1940s, Swedish homes and interiors underwent an adaptation to a more modern way of life and living. Termed Swedish Modern, it is often characterized as a somewhat gentler and perhaps more humanistic iteration of modernism. This distinction was notably showcased in exhibitions such as Paris 1937 and New York 1939. The focal point of this movement was the development of utilitarian items and artistic works for everyday use, marked by an innovative design ethos. In the 1940s, the production of luxury goods once again became a hotbed for groundbreaking ideas. The novel approach to creating inviting and comfortable interiors that emerged in Sweden during the late 1930s and 1940s has left an enduring imprint on the Scandinavian style of furnishing. Prominent figures associated with Swedish Modern include Bruno Mathsson, GA-Berg, Elias Svedberg, Carl-Axel Acking, Carl Malmsten, and notably, Josef Frank. In summary, Swedish Modernism is acknowledged for its softer and more pleasing manifestation of modern design principles. • Side Table in the Manner of Pierre Chareau
    By Pierre Chareau
    Located in London, GB
Stunning table after Pierre Chareau originally designed for the Club-House of the Beauvallon Golf Hôtel in 1928 . The table has a wooden top, supported by a riveted steel base. Completed in 1928, the Club-House of the Beauvallon Golf Hôtel represented the first major commission for Pierre Chareau in collaboration with the Dutch architect Bernard Bijvoet. The white-painted cement-rendered club-house was an asymmetric structure executed in the prevailing Modernist style, and comprised of a kitchen, a bar-dining area, and an open terrace. With the exception of fully-upholstered seating that was reserved for use in the interior, the majority of furnishings expressed Chareau's creative interest in the use of steel and iron for furniture manufacture. These included a variety of occasional tables and iron-framed chairs with woven cane seats, designed for use on the open terrace. This commission was amongst the first to illustrate the intensive working relationship between Pierre Chareau and the metal-worker with whom he exclusively collaborated, Louis Dalbet. In good original condition, some shrinkage to the circular top. Literature: p.92 Pierre Chareau Designer and Architect published by Taschen Provenance: from the collection of Marion Lambert...
