Not A Hyperanthropos', oil on canvas

About the Item

The title of this work ‘Not a hyperanthropos’ is based on many different literature and essays the artist Antonius Aloysius studied. The term ‘hyperanthropos’ originates from the Greek-Roman author Dionysius van Halicarnassus. Nowadays, the term could be described in many ways. Most famously is ‘Ubermensch’, invented by Nietzsche. The term is often used to describe someone who is able, able to create, be alone, someone who strives for meaning during their life on earth and has beyond human strength. The painting depicts a figure, who, at first glance, looks grounded and informed. However, he’s in fact a slave to consumerism, proclaims narcissistic nihilism and other pathological personality traits. He is in fact nothing like a hyperanthropos. The artist Antonius Aloysius was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands (1999). He started his study Industrial Design Engineering in 2017. During this study he (re)discovered his passion for art. A while later he entered his first studio and embarked on an adventure that captivates him to this day. Antonius gets his inspiration from books, such as well-known Russian literature, but also from films and new media. In his work, where the emphasis is strongly on technical evolution or painting skills, the central themes can always be traced back to his search for the beauty and insights of his own humanity. Antonius usually starts exclusively digitally by searching for images or texts that he processes into digital collages. These collages form the basis of almost every painting, after which he starts with a more or less basic sketch followed by the first oil paint strokes.
