'The Last Supper' A Victorian plaque by Coalbrookedale in cast iron c.1878

An English Victorian Coalbrookedale cast iron relief-cast plaque of The Last Supper, after Leonardo Da Vinci's late 15th Century original mural. Circa 1878. The design originated at Coalbrookdale and is known to have been copied by various foundries at home and abroad. The design appears in the 1877 Coalbrookdale Company catalogue (No. 131) where it was for sale for £1. The rectangular plaque modelled in bas-relief with the saints flanking the seated Christ at the long table. Christ has prime position at the centre of the table with the saints surrounding him. The plaque is incised to the lower edge with the legend: “AMEN DICO VOBIS QUIA UNUS VESTRUM ME TRADITURUS EST” (“Truly I say to you that one of you will betray me” Matt 21: 26). It was reproduced by Coalbrookdale in Shropshire from about 1840 until 1900. An example of it can be found at the Coalbrookdale Museum.The Plate is rectangular of shape and complete with Coalbrookedale etched into the back of the plaque. Approx.
