Ettore Cercone Period Orientalist Female Portraits

About the Item

Wonderful portrait of two oriental women in traditional clothes signed Eugenio Cecconi. This painting, never before on the market, comes from a private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition. Ettore Cercone (Messina, November 21, 1850 — Sorrento, September 12, 1896) was an Italian painter, mainly of female figures, seascapes and orientalist subjects. He was an officer of the Italian Royal Navy, but retired to dedicate himself to painting Cercone was born in Messina on 21 November 1850. He was the son of Francesco Cercone and his wife, Celeste Irene. He joined the navy at a very young age and rose to the level of lieutenant in 1878. While at sea, during the Battle of Lissa (1866), he painted the Governolo. His career took him to the West Indies where he began collecting specimens of marine flora and fauna for the "Aquarium" station in Naples. He worked as a researcher at the "Aquarium" 1883 and 1884 where he found that he could devote himself more fully to painting. He left active service in the Navy in 1888 but went into the Naval Reserve, where he was promoted to a rocket captain two years later. He is believed to have lived in Naples during his Navy career. Almost all of his paintings remain in Naples and the region. His paintings have clear references to the Neapolitan artistic culture of the late nineteenth century, and in particular to Domenico Morelli, which whom he perhaps also had a more direct relationship. In 1880, he produced nine paintings with Arabic figures. Following that, he concentrated on Oriental themes which were very popular with the bourgeois society of the time. Cercone's works are difficult to locate since most of them are in private collections. Cercone died at Sorrento on 12 September 1896. • George Lance Period Signed Picture Portrait

Beautiful oil on canvas painting depicting a young noblewoman sitting outdoors with a bouquet of flowers in her hand and a cage on the ground, by the great English artist George Lance This painting, never before on the market, comes from a private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition. Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. George Lance (24 March 1802 – 18 June 1864) was an English painter of still life and portrait miniatures. Lance was born at the old manor-house in Little Easton in Essex. His father was William Lance who had previously served in a regiment of light horse and was at the time of Lance's birth an adjutant in the Essex yeomanry; he later became the inspector of the Bow Street horse-patrol. His mother, Louisa Lucy (née) Constable, with whom his father had eloped from boarding-school, was the daughter of Colonel Constable of Beverley in Yorkshire. Although Lance showed a predilection for art at a very early age, he was placed, while not yet fourteen, in a factory in Leeds. However, the work injured his health and he returned to London. Wandering one day into the British Museum, he casually started a conversation with Charles Landseer, who happened to be drawing there. On learning that Landseer was a pupil of Benjamin Haydon, he went early next morning to that painter's residence, and asked to become a pupil. Haydon replied that if his drawings promised future success he would instruct him for nothing. Not many days later Lance, still not yet fourteen, entered Haydon's studio, and remained there for seven years, at the same time studying in the schools of the Royal Academy. While designing a picture inspired by Homer's Iliad, he decided, before putting on the colours, to paint some fruit and vegetables as practice. This work attracted the notice of Sir George Beaumont, who purchased it, and this success led him to paint another fruit-piece, which he sold to the Earl of Shaftesbury. He then painted two fruit-pieces for the Duke of Bedford...
