Large Marine or Ship Painting after Hans Bohrdt 1930s Original Solid Oak Frame

About the Item

An imposing, muscular impasto oil on board, unsigned, after Hans Bohrdt (1854-1945), in original period solid Oak picture frame. We love this painting for it’s dramatic scale and modish 1930s tones, which remind us of the saturated colours of mid century Technicolor film. We can see it hanging in a cosy den with comfortable leather chairs, near a well stocked bar cart, by soft lamplight. The painting without frame measures a grand 95cm x 64cm or 37.5 x 25.2 inches. Bohrdt was an important German marine artist. His particular skill was in capturing the expansive sense of freedom and adventure evoked by ships at sail or under steam. He went on to illustrate shipping as a commercial artist for travel posters and as a marine artist in his own right. He was recognised by Emperor Wilhelm II. Bohrdt’s works are beautifully composed. This painting is an excellent example of his style. The sparse and snowy landscape acts as an austere, dramatic backdrop to the glory of a ship setting full sail. Many of Bohrdt’s works were lost in the bombing of Germany towards the end of WWII. However, they had previously been sold as large format prints prior to the war and these were popular across Europe, the UK and Australia. We believe this unsigned painting has been made by an admirer of his work, using one such large format print, probably around the mid 1930s. It appears a print has been mounted on board and used as the background sketch for this painting. The artist has used bold colour and broad impasto palette knife strokes to give this painting texture. They’ve shown particular skill with their use of more modish, saturated and decorative colours, but skilfully managed to retain and express Bohrdt’s composition and dramatic sensibility. It would be rare indeed to find an original Bohrdt of this scale, in this condition. Here at least we can enjoy his work in oil on board, as interpreted by an appreciative fellow artist. We have included an image of the original Bohrdt print on which this work is based. The print is signed ‘Hans Bohrdt’ lower left. Our painting is unsigned. We can find no record of an existing original of this particular work.

  • 'Beach Camp' Modernist Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery, 1984
    By Anne Montgomery
    Located in Melbourne, AU
Anne Montgomery has been considered for many years one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett and Lina Bryans, her work is now recognised as an important part of Australian modernism. The breadth and quality of Montgomery's work over a long lifetime has always been appreciated by other artists. As Australian women artists in the mid Century period were relegated to the fringes of the establishment, they freely explored their own vision and developed their own style. Montgomery's work richly deserves the attention it's now receiving. This work shows Montgomery's unique perception and expression of colour in the Australian landscape. Her use of oil on board gives her work a robust structure but the inclusion of ink sketching in the work gives it a delicate texture. Her foliage and grasses tickle, her fabric floats, trees dance - her landscapes are in constant movement. This painting depicts a family camping under canvas amongst the Tea...

  • Jug and Shell Still Life Oil Painting Signed Anne Montgomery
    By Anne Montgomery
    Located in Melbourne, AU
This small but lovely work is an excellent example of Montgomery's joyfully experimental modernism. It is a sketch in oil on composition board. A table and jug are heavily outlined. The shape of a white seashell is superimposed, with a ghostly idea of it's internal spiral and speckled surface sketched in. The table surface is covered in sgraffito curls while heavy brush strokes build texture in the background. Montgomery's painting vibrates with lively observations of colour and texture. It was purchased from the artist's own studio (the address is penciled on the back) for a single owner collection, then passed down by descent. Anne Montgomery has for many years been one of the women artists Australia forgot. Not any more. Along with the likes of Clarice Beckett...
