"Medieval Battle, " Brilliant Art Deco Painting w/ King and Knights, Red & Yellow

About the Item

Rich with color -- including blood red, canary yellow and rich blue -- and full of astonishing detail, this crowded scene depicts a Medieval king on horseback expiring from an arrow to the chest, surrounding by a writhing crowd of knights in armor, many dead or dying, their faces contorted from the agony of the moment -- a testimony to the violence and tragedy of war. Above the scene, like the stage curtain of a theatre production, hangs three layers of Art Deco clouds in graduated shades of gray. The artist was Cesare Bentivoglio, who painted fairly conventional landscapes for much of his life, but for a few charmed years in the late 1920s, created a series of figurative scenes, like this, each of which explored mythological or legendary events, and all expressed in a strong palette. The painting is gouache on heavy paper or board. It is both monogrammed in the lower right. (Dimensions include frame and matte; visible painting itself is 17 inches high by 16 inches wide.).
